Dave Wilder moved to LA in 1991 from Philadelphia where he had studied bass and jazz composition with the late Denis Sandole, (Teacher of John Coltrane and James Moody), and played shows with local rappers while attending the University of Pennsylvania.

Macy Gray spotted Dave playing with a soul group called the 2pc at a small Hollywood club in 1994 and eventually recruited him to play on her debut album on Atlantic records.  He co-wrote a bunch of the songs on the never released album including the title track. Dave hit the road for several years to play bass for Liz Phair and Jeremy Toback but was recruited back by Macy in 1998. She had secured another record deal based on the strength of the song “I Try” that she had co-written with Dave and his friends Jinsoo Lim and Jeremy Ruzumna years earlier. (He was nominated for a 2001 “song of the year grammy” for the co-write.)

Macy convinced Dave to quit his other road gigs and come play with her again.  During the next three years, Dave toured the world playing with Macy, jamming on stage with idols like Bootsy Collins, Carlos Santana, Prince, and George Clinton, and got to learn first hand how to move a crowd. He played on countless tv shows throughout the world from “Top of the Pops,” in the UK to  “Saturday Night Live.” In 2001, weary of 5 straight years of touring, Dave came back to LA and began a dual career as a writer/composer and session bassist, playing electric and upright bass on many major label and independent records, as well as tv show and movie soundtracks.
